Project Title: Food for All: Supporting Vulnerable People in the Holy Month of Ramadan
1. Executive Summary
The holy month of Ramadan is a time of spiritual reflection, fasting, and heightened generosity for Muslims worldwide. However, for vulnerable individuals—including low-income families, widows, orphans, refugees, and the homeless—the requirement to fast (abstaining from food and drink from dawn to sunset) exacerbates the challenges of food insecurity.
Social Rehabilitation Foundation UK proposes the "Food for All" project to ensure that no one in our community goes hungry during this blessed month. This initiative aims to provide nutritious food packs for pre-dawn meals (Suhoor) and hot meals to break the fast (Iftar). By doing so, we will enable our vulnerable beneficiaries to observe Ramadan with dignity, peace, and spiritual focus.
2. Background & Rationale
Food insecurity is a growing concern, exacerbated by the rising cost of living. During Ramadan, the need becomes more acute. Fasting requires physical strength, yet many individuals begin their fast without adequate food for Suhoor and break it with insufficient nutrition .
Across the UK and globally, displaced people, refugees, and those in poverty often face the month with anxiety over where their next meal will come from . For those living in shelters or on the streets, accessing a prepared, hot meal at sunset is a significant challenge . Furthermore, Islamic teachings provide specific allowances for charity during this time, such as Zakat, Sadaqah, and Fidya, which are designed to purify wealth and support the needy .
There is a profound spiritual reward in feeding a fasting person. As the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “Whoever gives iftar to one who is fasting will have a reward like his, without that detracting from the fasting person's reward in the slightest” . The "Food for All" project is designed to channel this community generosity into tangible, life-sustaining aid.
Vision: To create a community where everyone has access to nutritious food during Ramadan, enabling them to observe the month with dignity.
Mission: To deliver targeted food assistance to vulnerable and marginalised groups, alleviating hunger and fostering social cohesion during the holy month.
This project is designed to support individuals who are most at risk of food poverty, including:
Low-income families struggling with the cost of living.
Refugees and asylum seekers housed in temporary accommodation .
Homeless individuals who have no means to cook or store food.
Elderly and chronically ill people who cannot shop or prepare meals easily .
To effectively address the needs of the target population, Social Rehabilitation Foundation UK will implement the following two-pronged approach:
Description: Distribution of one-month food parcels to families in need.
Contents: Based on nutritional guidelines and cultural dietary customs, each pack will include staple items such as rice, flour, lentils, cooking oil, sugar, tea, dates, and spices .
Impact: Provides stability, allowing families to prepare their own Suhoor and Iftar meals at home, reducing the stress of daily food shopping .
Description: Serving cooked, hot meals at sunset to break the fast.
Locations: Distribution points at mosques, community centres, and homeless shelters. For rough sleepers, outreach teams will deliver packed Iftar boxes .
Menu: Nutritious, balanced meals designed to restore energy after a long fast, including proteins, carbohydrates, and hydration (water and dates) .
Social Rehabilitation Foundation UK recognises the importance of religious obligations in charitable giving. The "Food for All" project will be structured to accept and distribute various forms of Islamic charity:
Zakat: Funds will be strictly used for eligible recipients (the poor, needy, and those in debt) as outlined in the Qur’an .
Fidya & Kaffarah: Donations for missed fasts will be used to provide meals (estimated at £5-£7 per day, covering two meals for one person) .
Sadaqah (General Donations): These will fund the general distribution of food packs and hot meals, covering operational flexibility .
By the end of Ramadan 2026, Social Rehabilitation Foundation UK aims to achieve the following:
Food Security: Provide essential nourishment to 1000 number of vulnerable individuals/families.
Dignity: Enable 1000 number of families to prepare meals at home with culturally appropriate food packs.
Community Engagement: Mobilise a network of volunteers for packing and distributing meals.
Spiritual Fulfilment: Allow donors to fulfil their religious obligations (Zakat, Fidya) with transparency and impact.
Note: Based on UK charity benchmarks
